Security cameras: the rule, and what to do if you find one

The rule

No camera inside a place on Kabora. Not in a hallway, not in a shared indoor space, not a doorbell camera pointed indoors, and not one the host says is switched off. Outdoor cameras are allowed, and every one of them has to be declared. A camera that was never declared breaks the rule the same way an indoor one does.

What a host has to say about each camera

  • Where it is, picked from five outdoor places and nothing else: front door or entrance, driveway or parking, back garden or yard, pool or hot tub area, or a shared outdoor entrance. There is no indoor option and no box to type a location into, so an indoor camera cannot be written down in the first place.
  • What it covers, in the host's own words. A camera with no description is refused the moment the host tries to save it, and the whole declaration is thrown out rather than half-saved — so "there is a camera" and nothing more never reaches a listing.

Answering the question at all is optional. A host is not stopped from putting a listing up while the camera question sits unanswered.

What you read on the listing

Under Safety on the listing page, one of three things:

  • "No security cameras on this property." The host said there are none.
  • "One security camera, outside." — or "3 security cameras, all outside" — then each camera as its place and what it sees.
  • Nothing about cameras. The Safety section may still appear with other things the host said, but with no camera line. Silence is not the same as none. If it matters to you, ask before you book.

Expect the third one. The question is new. A listing added since then answers it on the last step of Add a listing, but an older one can only be answered in the Kabora app (a listing → Guest safety → Security cameras), which is in TestFlight. The website's listing editor has no camera field. So most listings today say nothing about cameras.

The old amenity tick is not an answer

Older listings only ticked an amenity called "Security camera on property", which never said indoors or out. That counts as unanswered, not as declared.

That tick has been retired: guests no longer see it on the website or in the app, and hosts can no longer tick it. A listing that carried it still counts as unanswered until its host declares.

Declared cameras — the place and the coverage — appear on the website only; the app's Safety & property row does not list them.

If you find one inside

On the website, scroll down the listing page past Safety to Report this listing. "There's a camera inside" is the first reason on the list. The report goes to Kabora staff, not to your host, and the link is on every listing — including the silent ones.

You have to be signed in. A report sent from a signed-out browser is refused with a note asking you to sign in first, and nothing is filed. In the Kabora app, Report this listing is at the foot of every listing, with the same reasons.

Kabora does not verify what a host declares and cannot detect a camera. Somebody in the room saying so is the only thing that catches one.
