Translating a message

Where it is

Open a message thread, on kabora.app or in the Kabora app. Underneath a message from your host, a small Translate to ‹language› link appears. Press it and the translation shows under the original. Press Hide translation to put it away again.

The language is the first one listed on your profile. If you have not listed any, it translates to English.

Whether it is available at all

Translation has to be switched on for the server you are using, and there is no setting you can reach to turn it on yourself. It is either there or it is not.

• The thing to look for is the link. If no links appear under your host's messages, translation is not available and nothing in that thread will translate.

Which messages carry a link

• Only messages from other people — your host, or someone travelling with you. There is no link on your own messages.
• Only messages with words in them. A photo or a video sent on its own has nothing to translate, so it carries no link.
• A message your host unsent leaves a short line saying so, and that line has no link.

What it does not do

Being straight about this so you do not go hunting:

• Nothing you write is translated on its way out. Your host receives your words exactly as you typed them. Your host has their own Translate control on their side of Kabora and can read your message in their language if they choose to.
• It never changes the message. The original stays exactly as written, above the translation, and your host is not told that you translated anything.
• Nothing is saved. The translation lives on your screen until you leave the page, then it is gone. Press the link again to get it back.
• A very long message can come back cut short. The translated text has a length limit of its own, and it ends without warning when it hits it. If the ending is missing, ask your host to resend the important part in a shorter message.

If the translation fails, a short note appears under the link and the original is left untouched. Press the link again to try once more.

When it matters

This is a machine translation offered as a reading aid, not a guarantee. When the detail matters — a door code, a date, an amount, an address — ask your host to confirm it plainly rather than acting on the translated version.
